What Does Freedom Really Mean?

Everyone is born to live free but not everyone has the courage to create that freedom in their life.  Now, it should follow that as we are born free then it should not be something to fight for but unfortunately, life tends to tie people up in knots and make them believe it is impossible to get the freedom they crave.

So, yes, if you are going to be free, you are going to have to fight to get it back.

When I think of freedom, there are three areas that I consider

  • Time
  • Money
  • Emotions

Let’s look at them one by one…

TIME

This is your most precious freedom because it is finite.  If you are not careful with it, you lose it and there is no getting back time.

So, think about it; it is the end of 2016, do you feel your time was well spent this year?

Do you feel you made the most of every opportunity?

Did you always feel like you were running out of time?

Did you use YOUR time to fulfil YOUR agenda or did you find that you were dragged along by other people and their agenda for you?

In a perfect world, how would you have spent your time this year?

Take some time to really think this through.  The examined life is more likely to be productive and free whereas most regular people just wake up and react to whatever gets thrown their way.  If you want time freedom, you need to recognise that you have the same amount of time as anyone you consider to be successful and free so where are you not using your time effectively?

Whip out that journal, write out some thoughts around how free you feel with time.

MONEY

What comes up for you when you consider your money?

Is it a feeling of never having enough? Debt? Uncertainty and fear?

Or do you feel content around money? Do you feel abundant around money?

Most people, entrepreneurs included, struggle to get as much money as they want. They try not to think about it at all because when they do, arguments ensue, life seems stifled and hard and all because there is such a need around money.

Others pretend to not be motivated by money but still live controlled by money. Their work is determined by money, what they do with their time is determined by money so though they claim not to be motivated by it, they are.

Freedom around money comes when you realise that you are taken care of…

That you don’t NEED it desperately.

‘Need’ stifles creativity and therefore, freedom.

The only thing that separates you from all the money you want is the work and it is tough to do the work when you are feeling needy. The desperate need causes you to think there is no way out and that you are doomed and so, you create exactly that.

The more people you serve, the more money you make – this is a mantra I live by and so instead of focusing on how to make more money, I focus on how to serve more people. No, I am not saint and so there are times when I have succumbed to the need for money, but it just ends up with me having LESS money – Definitely not freeing!

So, I learn to bring myself back to – How can I serve more people? How can I create more clients? If I can keep my mind on that while keeping an internal sense of being taken care of, then all things tend to work out well and I feel free around my money.

EMOTIONS

Emotional freedom is essential to use your time in a way that suits you and also to create money or use money in a way that makes you happy.

Emotions can be such a tangled maze. So, considering 2016, how free did you feel in your relationships? How much of your time was spent pleasing people instead of coming up with new and novel ways to serve people? How much of your time was spent feeling emotional about your money instead again of being caught up in creation?

Feelings can be a great guide for life but they can also be allowed to get way out of control and you end up in a messy situation, feeing stuck and unable to be the leader you are called and WANT to be. So, take a moment to write in your journal where you may have allowed your emotions to guide you astray. And how you want to step into more emotional freedom over the next 12 months.

Your emotions may also keep you tied up in a relationship that is not empowering. Think about it now – Where could you be freer, if you are able to completely honest with yourself?

Freedom has to be fought for.

It is not handed to you on a platter.

Fight for, deliberately design the life you are born to live…

Because you want to
