As a parent I want to give my girls the strength and resilience to cope with the world, and the skills to make it a better place. I truly believe they should be the change they wish to see in the world.
Since the biggest chick declared she lacked confidence, I’ve always wondered what I could’ve done for her that would enable her to tap into her inner light.
So for the next International Women’s Day we’re going to firewalk as a family.
This will give the big chick her confidence, because if she can walk hot coals she can do anything (and I *know* she can do anything anyway, she just needs to know it) and the little chicks will do it because they want bragging rights. The big chick won’t let the little ones down and together we’ll be stronger as a family.
I can just imagine the stories at my funeral wake “Do you remember when mum made us firewalk and set her jeans on fire?” or “Do you remember when mum rang screaming for the woods after walking the hot coals because a spider touched her toes”. I want the stories they share about me to remind them of how much I love them. I want them to have memories that will last them their lifetime and they pass them on to their own children.
Other families will talk about fights at weddings… Mine will talk about how I wanted them to burst their their inner blocks and be their best selves, even if it meant walking on fire to do so. Even if I didn’t feel like it or want too, I’d do it for them.
If you would like to join us, and empower your young women please do leave a comment so Lottie can follow up with you and get you the details so you can make your decision.
I’m also going to raise funds via Birds on the Blog to enable Lottie to have some heavily subsidised spaces for single mums and women who’ve experienced domestic abuse etc.
I don’t know what this will look like just yet, just that it’s on the cards and we’ll make it happen somehow.

P.S. This is a repost of my Facebook status. Here are some additional facts for you…
- The event is for international women’s day
- It’s a family day, so your sons can come too
- Lottie is going to make a special fire that even the youngest can do
- The youngest will be 8.
- Although children younger have walked fires safely, you need to be able to relax too so 8 is the minimum age
- We’ll update here and Lottie’s blog with the plans as we’re going to do this for our daughters.
- Yes, you can do other things to build confidence. We’re doing this.
