5 Steps for Women to Pursue a Career in Electronics

It’s not easy for most women to get into a male-dominated field, such as Electronics. But this does not mean women cannot find success when taking up a career in Electronics. While women may have to work harder to carve out a place for themselves and gain the same level of respect and opportunities as their male counterparts, working in a male-dominated industry and getting ahead is such a rewarding experience. 

For women interested in pursuing a career in Electronics, here are the steps to take.

1. Get a Degree in Electronics 

The first step to pursuing a career in Electronics is getting a Degree in Electronics. Nowadays, numerous universities are attracting more women to study Electronics, which is a good sign. These Electronics programs teach students how to work with digital circuits, computer applications, wireless systems, computer programming, etc. 

The Bachelor in Electronics programs will give students access to virtual electronic systems, giving students the knowledge and experiences they need to take up jobs in Electronics. After graduation, these students can work as electronics engineers, systems administrators, network administrators, and IT professionals. Students will also be given necessary training depending on their chosen specialty. The program’s core curriculum includes laboratory assignments and lectures on computer networking, communications systems, digital circuits, microcomputer applications, electric circuits, etc. Students can also choose specialised topics like micro-processing, industrial electronics, optical signals, and alternative energy systems. 

The curriculum for electronics engineering is often very similar to electrical engineering. However, a degree in Electronics Engineering has a narrower focus and will cover more specialised coursework in subjects handled by electronics engineers, such as analogue, digital, power, and consumer electronics.

2. Look for Apprenticeships  

Women interested in pursuing a career in electronics should look for apprenticeships or internships. Taking up an apprenticeship will allow you to acquire valuable experiences in the field of electronics, improving your chances of getting hired once you start looking for jobs. Internships also allow you to experience the actual work environment and develop the practical skills and knowledge required to excel in electronics.

Apprenticeships refer to programs that offer students the opportunity to gain specific skills, knowledge, and experience they need to achieve their dream of becoming an engineer. Usually, this is accomplished through classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Just like with degree-holding engineers, those taking up apprenticeships in electronics engineering might have to rely on math and science principles to effectively perform their tasks. Some of the world’s best car companies are now taking progressive steps towards diversity and inclusion, making job opportunities more accessible to women. 

The industry of automotive has typically been a male-dominated one. Women were very much underrepresented in the industry, even though more than half of car buyers are women. Aside from ethical and moral reasons to improve diversity in the workplace, studies suggest that a more diverse workplace performs better than the less diverse one.
