The book that changed my life – The Invitation – Birds on the Blog

The book that changed my life – The Invitation

Like you I have read many books and have many that have had an impact. Choosing one book is tough, however, The Invitation by Oriah Mountain Dreamer has a special place in my heart.

The Invitation is based on a poem that starts…

“It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living, I want to know what you ache for”

and ends with

“I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in your empty moments.”

InvitationYou’ll have to buy the book to read the rest of this beautiful poem.

This is a small book, beautifully written from the heart. The author weaves each part of the poem into what that part means to her. As you read it you will ponder upon firstly the words of the poem. After you will consider what they mean to you and then upon her story. Finally, you will wonder at the stories  and how you find connection.

The Invitation ‘invites’ you to consider what is important to you on a soul level. To consider what it means to know who you are in your heart and not what the world sees.

Her story is raw and it begs you to open your eyes to the rawness of your life.

This short book is thought provoking and inspirational as well as weaving it’s way into your soul like no other. Every time I read the poem I think about me, my values, who I am and my place in the world. That a short poem and story can do that astounds me.

Books do not need to be weighty tomes to create an impact, what they need is to get you to identify with the sentiments and the story.

How to read The Invitation

This is the kind of book that you need to curl up in bed with a hot chocolate with and wearing your best fluffy PJ’s. As you settle back to read small sections, be prepared to let your mind wander as you explore your depths.

Take it a chapter at a time, read, reflect and journal about what her words mean to you.

This is the kind of book that I wished that I could write and her poem is the kind of poem I want my soul to reveal.

Read it, slowly, in a delicious space and you will be pleased that you did.
